Tips to Increase Your Fan Base as a Secondlife Musician

I have a couple tips to help you gain a little more exposure. You might be able to increase your fan base and make some extra sales too.

TIP #1
Are you a musician who performs in Secondlife?
Do you have an original song on MP3?
May we offer a little added exposure in SL?

DJ CapnJac Blazer, co-owner of MJ’s Blues and Dance Club, adds SL musician’s MP3s to his play lists when he has gigs. With your permission, and only if you have rights to the song, he would like to be able to add your song to his list too.

The reaction DJ CapnJac gets when he spins an SL musician’s tune is nothing less than amazing. People stop to listen and ask “Who is this?” When are they performing again?”.

It’s usually a DJ that gets a new song or artist introduced to the masses. What DJ CapnJac does is no different. He announces he has an SL musician, or more, in his play list and blends them in.

If you want to add one to DJ CapnJac’s playlist, contact him in-world. Secondlife name; CapnJac Blazer
Or you can contact him using the contact button below.

TIP #2
This tip might involve a little work, but will indeed increase sales. If you record your music, even create albums to sell, I’m pretty sure recording sessions don’t always go as plan. And I’m also confident, 99% of mistakes are recorded and edited out later.

All mistakes should be corrected before they become regrets. Before editing and deleting those mistakes, consider creating a bloopers CD.

Here’s where it gets interesting….
Don’t put the bloopers up for sale by itself. You actually give it away to a limited number of people that buy a CD from you. But on your sale description, you mention when the sale ends, the bloopers CD will be for sale by itself and 10% of the proceeds go to a charity.

To help people decide to buy your CD, give them a free MP3 of one of your best, not the best, but one of the best, originals from the album. Mention the bloopers CD on the free MP3 page so people will act fast.

Here’s why it works with a bloopers CD.
Many SL performers have a good following already. As a fan of several musicians myself, I know SL musicians are more open with their fans than others. Fans know your personality. One of things I hear most from people that come to MJ’s Blues is how much fun they have. When fans get your bloopers CD, they’ll listen to that before the album because they know how much fun you are in SL. They’ll share it with their real life friends, and before you know it, your fan base grew a little.

Something else to consider,
When advertising on websites, for instance adding a banner or logo with your link to a site to display to their visitors, it really is ok to go cheap sometimes. It really depends on the site. Make sure the site is geared towards entertainment. Even if the site has little traffic, you still want people to start seeing your ad everywhere.

Using Google or other real big name sites that offer ad placement is expensive! You really can get more exposure for the dollar when going cheap and everywhere. Just because 80% of websites have a Google ad box doesn’t mean your ad will be displayed. You’ll go through more money with less results a lot faster using the big names.

So remember, it’s ok to go cheap, sometimes they are the best exposure for your dollars.

If you have any sugestions, please feel free to add them here. Do not advertise or your post will be deleted without notice. If you want to advertise, we have a section for that

Paying it foward

During these times, we all need to be there for one another. As some companies add new fees and/or raise prices, we at MJ’s Blues and MJ’s Stream Solutions want you to know we will not follow that path. Our stream prices have been reduced and so have all our other service’s fees been lowered.

Our business directory is now just $1 to list your business for one month. Our basic 50 listener stream package prices are .99 cents for the first month then just $1.59 per month after that. Musicians and DJs can list free in a special directory created just for them! And we plan to bring more to the table for you to dig into in the coming weeks.

When a DJ or musician cancels their stream provider because they can not afford it, there’s a good possibility they are losing an income. If lowering our fees enables even one person to gain that advantage they need, then we made the right choice!

Combined sponsor donations, advertisements, business listings, and stream rental fees collected help make it possible for MJ’s Blues and Dance Club to hire more musicians and host more open mic events. We can’t thank you enough for your dedicated support and the trust in us you have shown over the years. Stop by often, and visit the club in-world to see what’s new and who’s performing next LIVE at…

Where the Stars Come Down To Play.

You Decide on Tools

IMPORTANT INFO BEFORE YOU START
Make sure your computer has all of the media components installed and working. You need to have a stereo mixer installed. Without the mixer some of the broadcasting components may not work. For instance your mic or headset. After its all working follow thru with the rest of the story.

As I had mentioned in my last post, you will need some tools and a bit of patience to setup, for the most part, a problem free broadcast. I should mention you need to know what type of broadcasting fits you, unless you already know which direction you’re heading. Do you want to be a DJ, or create and run your own radio station? Maybe you’re interested in setting up your own server? Can you and are you willing to pay a monthly fee. You can get a Free stream thru SHOUTcast and have your own radio broadcast, but that involves a little more. It has to do with MP3 Licensing and the Trans-coder. Especially if you set up your own server! Its a very small fee and very well worth it :) .

Lets stay with the SecondLife aspect for now.

Djing in SL you will need the following items;

(1) You need a Stream, this is nothing more then a pathway for your music to be encoded and traveled on. Its a simple URL,
example

http://190.189.187.47:and a port number like 1234

Its usually a 4 digit number. At times you’ll get a 5 digit port number which you may not want. The issue with that is it’s typically a server that is over saturated with existing ports (to much going on). Some streams have domain names example

mystreamaccount.com

If you purchase a stream like that, make sure to get the IP numbers to use instead. You will have less problems.

SHAMELESS PLUG HERE
mjsstreamsolutions.com and MJ’s Blues and Dance Club, located inside SL have SHOUTcast Streams of all sizes for rent. We ask a small monthly fee of just $5.00 USD. Ask us about the many package options available. These are very dependable streams with an excellent up-time history. Ask our clients.

(2) You’ll need client side software. Meaning the software that will encode and send your stream out.

  • For Windows you can use Winamp* free of charge.
    Winamp Pro
  • Sam Broadcaster will cost a big chunk for the full version,
  • Virtual DJ full version cost’s less but is not as easy to use as Sam. Trial versions are only good for about 1 hr.
  • On Macs, Nicecast is good, Nicecast has a very small License fee if you don’t pay the fee your broadcast’s will get noisy.
  •

    (3) Do you want SHOUTcast or Icecast? These are the actual streams, They are both very good. Each has its setbacks but minimal. They are both out with 2 versions. SHOUTcast V2 now supports Auto DJ and may even send Video. I haven’t looked into that. Icecast has always had Auto DJ and can also send video.

    (4) You should have a very large library of Music. It only makes sense. In order to be a good DJ, you need to be able to satisfy the tastes of your listeners. In SL many clubs play different genres. Like the Blues, Blues/Rock, Classic Rock, Dance, Pop, Swing, Hip/Hop and so on. There are DJ’s who Mix their own, which is cool. Wish i could. Technically I can, but I don’t have the patience for it lol.

    (5) Once you have acquired your Tools, the only thing you need to do is setup your software and get ready to go live! Of course, you need to find a Club in SL or build one to suit your taste, in order to broadcast to an audience. Clubs who are looking for DJ’s usually post ads in the SL classifieds, or check the search under, DJ’s Jobs, Clubs hiring etc. I have found a lot of clubs to get a DJ job from. When I’m not doing the club scene I turn on my DJ Booth inside MJ’s Blues, let my friends know and advertise, using the same classifieds I mentioned earlier. The next thing you’ll see are people showing up. 2 hrs go by with great tunes and conversation. Maybe you’ll meet a new friend.

If you are reading this and you are not a member of Second Life you should give it a whirl. It’s free and you can see for yourself what this Virtual community is all about. It’s more then you think. It’s as real as it gets, ( yes you are a cartoon Avatar lol, and yes you and I, control Avatars ) :) . There are over 10 million users in SL. People from all over the Globe doing what ever it is they do, all the while enjoying a Secondlife. I must tell you, as with everything else in Real Life, SL has its flaws. For some people SL has been a life saver. For others a Downfall and I mean…DOWNFALL SLAM THAT HURTS, type of experience. So just be careful and take it slow.

I will be writing some articles dealing with Setups for SHOUTcast, Icecast, Winamp + *(DSP) you must install the DSP for Winamp. I’ll try and get info on Nicecast but sorry, I don’t have a Mac nor do I know anybody with a Mac, to do any proper research with. Any info I get may or may not be Great, but its info. Mostly my experience is with Win, XP,7 and SHOUTcast using Sam, Winamp along with setting it all up in SecondLife. For real life events too.

I’ve been a SHOUTcast Reseller for 4 years, and personally use and configure what I sell. I use Centova Controls for my servers. I’m also a Club Owner in SecondLife. With this knowledge I figured I could pass the info forward.

I will also be setting up a Downloads page for some of the stuff I talk about. Freebies and Trial versions. Links for the products mentioned can be found on our resource’s page.

Have a Question or a Problem?. Feedback is welcome.

Tips for Secondlife DJs

I’ve been a DJ in SecondLife for about 4 years, and learned a few things. Its not as easy as you might think. Why you may be asking? Its Simple, not everyone can talk to other’s or you may be mic shy, embarrassed or you may be simply to nervous to say anything. Maybe you don’t have a microphone hooked up etc. Being a DJ is a job, no different then say a Carpenter, Plumber even a Doctor or maybe a SL Club owner.

All jobs, no matter how big or small have their own little ways of getting it done the right way. While DJing in SL I have had the opportunity to introduce to the audience many of SL’s Biggest Blues and Rock performers. I’ve done Charity Events, Auctions, opening’s for new Clubs, Wedding’s, even been in a few DJ Battles and Won :) .

DJing, for the most part, is a lot of fun. You get to mingle with the audience which gives you the chance to listen to what the people want to hear. After all, isn’t that what a DJ is supposed to do?. DJ’s spin tunes for the crowd. That’s what we do, cut and dry. We make people happy. Every now and then we introduce new music, or play the top hits. Or as a DJ, you might even have a specific genre you like, and play only that. It really doesn’t matter what you play as long as it keeps the people’s interest.

As a DJ it helps to have more then one type of music taste. What I mean by this is…

    • Blues
    • Rock
    • Country
    • Techno
    • Rap
    • Hip-Hop
    • Swing
    • Heavy Metal
    • Classical

lol not much call for Classical in SL but you get my point.

My experience in SL is I’m always spinning a lot of Blues, Pop, Dance, Classic Rock and New-age Rock, even some Country Music and yes even Weddings. The variety of music is so large no one DJ can have it all. So you need to have a very large library of Tunes, This way you should be able to handle what comes at you.

Its been said that without DJ’s, Musicians wouldn’t be noticed as quick. DJs have introduced so many of the worlds best Musicians to the masses via the air waves. And let it be said that without Musicians, DJ’s wouldn’t have much to do. We both complement each other without question.

Ok so lets get a few tips

As with any job you need some training even if it’s only 2 hrs :) There are a few DJ training courses available in SL look under Education in Search. Some even provide the tools you will need to be a DJ in SL. Same as Real Life you need to learn the basics.

Fact! as a DJ in SL you will probably Not be Paid for your services…you Will on the other hand probably get 100% of the tips people will send your way. Some Clubs offer 80% with the other 20% in their pocket. Pick your Clubs or job offers carefully.

Try and use your own tip jar, this way you can give out things like T-Shirts, Hats SL Gifts, you know, those Drinks that make you fall over and slam the floor lol. And you keep 100% of the Tips.

Develop a Show or a Style, something to set you apart from the rest of the line. Do things that people will remember and want to come back and see or hear again. Try sound effects, Promos, Beginning and Ending Tunes etc.

Never repeat the same list, its ok to pull some tunes and put them in another list but never ever play the same list over and over boring and you will lose all hope of being successful. Always create a fresh list to play.

Get to your Gig at least 15 mins early so you can make sure everything works. In SL crap happens lol so its best to try and get done ahead of time :) . It also gives you a chance to mingle and find out what the patrons want to hear.

Always mention the name of the Club, your host or hostess’s name and the audience name ex Hello I’m (your name ex DJ Fatman Sparks) Welcome to ABC Blues. Hello Mickey Mothchild its good to see you and Folks let me introduce my Host/Hostess Rayne Overme her tip jar is over there by… by mentioning the tip jars for the club and staff they will mention you and yours :) get the picture:). That’s a good way to really make things comfortable and profitable for both you the host staff and the club. If your gig is 2hrs then you would plug the Club and Host/Hostess every 30 mins or so, don’t over due it people hate being asked for Donations so be easy about it.

It costs Real Life Money to do anything in SL Everyone from the Club Owners, Musicians, DJ’s, Merchants, Designers etc. Even the Training schools it all cost money. Usually the Clubs have to reach in their pockets to pull out a lot of RL CASH to have a great place. They sometimes have outside help from Sponsors. As a DJ you can help offset the cost’s and get tipped or even paid +tip per gig just by giving them a shout-out now and then.

It will cost you some $USD/L$ to get setup as a DJ in SL, same as it would in RL.

One thing you may want is a Tip board /web site /info-Bio card, style board. You may want a DJ Headset which has effects, how about a portable DJ stand. You can, with some time, build all this stuff and save, but its faster to buy it and build in your spare time. In RL, a DJ must spend Hundreds if not Thousands of dollars USD to have the best equipment. Not to worry! In SL it only looks expensive. Its actually cheap. You can have the best and may not pay more then 20-30$ USD.

As I said the initial cost is about 20-30$ USD to get setup. Now you should have your own Stream and a way of broadcasting your music and voice into SL. You can Broadcast using Free Software that is easily obtainable Like Winamp. Simplecast or pay for other Good programs like Virtual DJ, Sam Broadcaster etc. I Prefer Sam Broadcaster because it’s very easy to use, but that’s just my opinion.

Now you’ll need a stream. Its a suggestion to rent a Stream with guaranteed up time, if you want to be thought of as a good DJ. Clubs will sometimes provide and tell you to use their stream, that’s fine just make another encoder. You want a Stream with lowest Port Numbers if possible, because the lower the port the less problems you’ll have its a tech thing lol.

You’ll also want a set of IP numbers instead of …
Example; http:// A DOMAINNAMEHERE
Example; http://191.123.100.48:8200
… This is a direct hookup to your server instead of the Domain Name. The 4 groups of 3 numbers each, are the IP Address Numbers, the last 4 numbers, are the Port numbers. You can rent a stream from hundreds of places, they are all sort of cheap but read all packages very carefully because you want to get the best deal for your money. There are to many variables in these Packages to go over in this Tips Helper.

Choices for streams would be SHOUTcast or Icecast there are other services for those running Mac’s. Streams could be as high in Price as 10.00 $USD a month that’s alot of cash so buyer beware. I offer SHOUTcast streaming rentals for less then half that price online thru MJ’s Stream Solutions or in SL in the MJ’s Streaming barn located on the Island of intuitive Get there by clicking here. Just pop in its easy and you’ll be up and streaming in less then 15 mins :) . A stream is a stream. They are pretty much all the same…the difference is Service and Support.

There are a couple of things you should know about SHOUTcast and Icecast, the major 2 Differences is, Shoutcast’s auto DJ is not as Good as Icecast’s and Icecast can Send Video. Shoutcast can also do video but that’s a Different package. Most resellers of these products have the same pricing. You just have to Shop and get what you need. What you will need to figure out is …What do I want to do with my Stream Audio, Video, Both. After that decision then you field of choices becomes clear.

Other things you should consider:
You need a recent computer. Something with a lot of Memory and a Good sound system that is configured with a stereo mixer, this would be usually part of Windows or a program you can get for your system thru its Manufacture like Dell, HP, or who ever lol I built mine so :) . You should have at least a 1.8 processor, Programs like SL and Sam as a Example use a lot of system resources to bring in and send out simultaneously.

There is a lot more info I will post about many of the tips and topics I covered in this brief Tips paper so please check back and see :)

I hope some of this info was helpful, if it did GREAT to know. If not, write me and let me know, what info you need and I will see what I can do for you.
